6. What do we know about the extension already?
Steptoe Street was identified as the preferred alignment for a north-south street to serve the West Kennewick and South Richland Urban Growth Area(s) in a study conducted in May 1995 for the Benton-Franklin Regional Council. Steptoe Street has been part of the City of Kennewick and City of Richland long-range transportation planning since the late 1970's. A 100-foot dedicated right-of-way currently exists for the majority of the Steptoe Street corridor from Gage Blvd to Clearwater Avenue, and has since the 1970s. The long-range transportation planning for Steptoe Street designated the roadway as an Urban Arterial with limited access. Other than these basic long-range concepts, no specific planning has been completed by the Cities. This process is intended to assist the Cities in identifying a specific roadway design that meets the community's needs, with a commitment to identifying and implementing cost-effective design options addressing the concerns and issues of our citizens.
